Midge Ure at Newcastle City Hall, “Voice & Visions” Tour, May 2023

Support band India Electric Co. were quite the surprise, and I will be listening to more of their stuff for sure.  Consisting of Cole Stacey, Joseph O’Keefe, and Midge’s drummer Russell Field. Their version of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire was a particularly striking rendition.

Last time I saw Midge was back in 2019, at the Sage Gateshead. That Electronica set had some Ultravox songs, but not as many as I would have liked.  This gig at the City Hall, was fantastic with tunes from the classic Rage in Eden and Quartet albums. The 2023 leg of this massive tour visits an astounding 31 cities across the UK. And if you are lucky enough to attend one, you are in for a real treat.

Having been an Ultravox fan since the early 80s, I was spoilt when they played some belters like The Voice, Reap the Wild Wind, and Hymn. With some solo tunes thrown in for good measure like If I Was, No Regrets and Dear God.  Also the Visage cracker Fade to Grey.  The encore including Dancing with Tears in my Eyes, All Stood Still, and Vienna.

MIdge‘s voice still does the job, and I particularly enjoy his guitar playing. He can certainly shred along with the best of them. He has mentioned this may be his farewell tour as its quite a big piece of work to put something together like this. I for one hope he has one more left in him. Am certain the rest of the City Hall thought the same.
