Another action-packed night of amateur boxing at Newbiggin Leisure Centre saw Koast Radio in attendance again with live coverage broadcast over the airwaves. We also managed to have the event shown live through our Facebook page thanks to NE Films. A wonderful addition to the occasion was the huge screen displaying all of the action as it happened, providing a fantastic backdrop.
Jake Bakou of Kenton won a tight opening bout on a split decision to the disappointment of Newbiggin's Nathan McEvoy.
District Youth's Bradley Ford won the second bout in a non-stop action fight by a unanimous decision over Jak Hanson to leave Newbiggin without a win so far. That run continued when Jaylan Roye of MTK won a quite technical fight by a split decision in the next bout over Brandon Moscrop. John Varey made it two on the spin for team MTK with a unanimous win over District Youth's Bobby Patterson.
Newbiggin had to wait until the 5th fight of the evening to chalk up a win & give the local crowd something to cheer. Brad Batey winning an energetic fight on a split decision over Spennymoor's Spencer McCrone.
Billy Wilson built up some momentum for Newbiggin with their second straight win, this time by a unanimous decision. He applied himself very well throughout the whole bout, looking quite comfortable against Tom Sharkey of MTK.
Dean McGuigan made it 3 in a row for Newbiggin with a split decision to the dismay of North Star's Lee Scrafton who put in a good shift.
Shock decision of the night in the girls' bout next. European champ from Newbiggin Alex Brown lost a unanimous decision to Brandon's Megan Bainbridge. Controversial as it appeared she had the fight in the bag. Hmmm, a real head scratcher that one.
The best, however, was saved for last for the USL TTW Welterweight Development Belt. What a title fight! Non-stop right from the first bell to the last which saw local Billy Sankey dethroned by Callum Fenwick on a unanimous decision, much to the delight of his travelling bus load of fans who were in great voice throughout. Fenwick showed a fantastic work rate and application to overcome a gritty & hearty display by Sankey.
So, another successful & satisfying night of local boxing coverage for our Koast Sports team. Many thanks of course goes to sponsors JB Tiles & Bathrooms, to the guys from NE Films for providing the additional media footage, to the staff of Newbiggin Leisure centre, the boxers and their training teams for the tremendous entertainment, the officials & of course the spectators who all helped to make it a memorable night. Roll on the next one!
